CURRICULUM

OUR PROGRAM

Welcome to The Nysmith School, where we make a world-class education a joy-filled experience.

That is our mission statement, but more importantly, it is what we have always been dedicated to accomplishing–and what we have achieved for the better part of four decades.

Our program is differentiated to enable Nysmith teachers to meet the learning needs of each child, whether they are on grade level or up to four grade levels ahead. We specialize in differentiation to meet the needs of students who love to learn. Our curriculum is designed to introduce information and concepts years ahead of other schools, but having two teachers in each class allows every child to learn at a pace that’s perfect for them. Your child is also taught the critical thinking and problem solving skills that help facilitate the solution-oriented perspective that will serve them well as they continue their educational journey.

BEGINNERS - PRE K PROGRAM

Our preschool program was designed to foster a fun school experience–and begin laying the foundation of your child’s love of learning in a nurturing environment. Taught by enthusiastic and dedicated teachers, the Nysmith curriculum features reading and math up to four grade levels above grade in child-friendly play-based surroundings. We also include daily hands-on Science, French and much more. It is never too early to start teaching children that school is fun and stimulating.

LOWER SCHOOL PROGRAM (GRADES K-3)

One key to a world-class education is introducing children to stimulating content taught in a compelling way by passionate, energetic teachers in small classrooms with low teacher-to-student ratios.

Nysmith maximizes the benefit of those ratios by differentiating the program. While our teachers introduce children to content several years ahead of their peers, they do it in nurturing and thought-provoking fashion. Students learn critical thinking skills, to be both independent and resilient. The daily curriculum includes differentiated reading and math, hands-on science, technology, social studies and foreign language among other subjects.

Growing up at this school has inspired me in many ways including how to love learning and how to build relationships with fellow peers and teachers. Through my years at Nysmith I have been nurtured to be confident and have a voice of my own.”

MIDDLE SCHOOL PROGRAM (GRADES 4-8)

Although it’s never too early for children to embrace that school can–and should–be a joy-filled experience, it’s during the middle school years that Nysmith’s unique learning environment manifests its greatest strengths. While we continue to make school fun for our 4th-8th graders, our program now engages the children and challenges them to dig deeper and gain a greater understanding of what they learn in the classroom.

Our low teacher-to-student ratios allow us to recognize and respond to each child’s unique learning methodology, helping them work toward becoming their best selves even during the challenging developmental years as they seek to establish their individuality. The academic program continues to accelerate and differentiate, and we now begin to incorporate organizational skills, nurturing students to find a healthy work-life balance and accept an appropriate amount of technology use in their day-to-day activities. Although we continue to minimize the volume of homework, we are teaching the children how to plan and organize their work.
