STUDENT ATHLETES

They may not wear Nysmith School jerseys as they enjoy, and in many cases, excel at their sport of choice.

Yet for those keeping score of the game of life that goes far beyond the field or court of competition, there are countless Nysmith students who revel equally in both their academic and athletic accomplishments.

STANSBURY FAMILY

There’s one Nysmith family known for getting its kicks on the soccer field. The Stansbury team—7th grader Jake, 5th grader Maddie and 2nd grader Meredith—scores more than its share of goals while also earning high marks in the classroom. According to soccer mom/chauffeur Jennifer, part of her children’s sporting success is a logical extension of the life lessons and interpersonal skills they learned from their teachers at Nysmith.

ZAK AND ALYAH ILYAS

It was simply by chance that Zak Ilyas was introduced to what is now his sport of passion. While a 5th grader at Nysmith, he happened to walk by the Cardinal Fencing Academy in Sterling. Whatever caught his eye that day prompted him to take a few classes, enroll in a couple of summer camps and before he knew it, the now-8th grader from Ashburn was a sword-wielding fencer with the dream of competing internationally and some day even opening his own fencing club.
