Nysmith Lower School Traditions

Robotics Week

During Robotics Week, our students explore the exciting world of robots through hands-on, age-appropriate activities. They learn how robots work, what they can do, and how they operate—sparking curiosity and early problem-solving in a fun, memorable way.

Career Week

Career Week gives students a window into the big world beyond the classroom as parents visit to share what they do for work. Everything is explained in kid-friendly terms—doctors talk about helping people, engineers and other professionals share how they build and create—opening the door to endless possibilities and big dreams.

Famous American

One of our most beloved second-grade traditions is the Famous Americans Project. Each student chooses an American figure who inspires them, then learns how to research thoughtfully, asking good questions, and gathering information. The project culminates in a special presentation where students share their learning with parents, building confidence and practicing public speaking in a celebratory setting.

Overnight Trips

Starting in second grade, students take part in overnight trips that bring classroom learning to life. By visiting the places where history happened, children deepen their understanding in a way no textbook can match. Second graders travel to Williamsburg, and in third grade, students explore Philadelphia.

International Week

International Week is a joyful celebration of our community and the many cultures represented at Nysmith. Parents and grandparents visit to share traditions, customs, and stories, helping students learn to appreciate differences and build a sense of belonging and respect for others.

Nysmith Is Not A Decision We Took Lightly

Rated 5 out of 5

“Nysmith is not a decision we took lightly when looking to enroll our daughter in second grader. We are so pleased with her experience at Nysmith – the education is top notch (your kids will be comfortable doing work at least a year ahead their current grade, maybe several years ahead in some cases), the administration and the faculty are very engaged and responsive to any issues, and there are many opportunities for parents to participate and interact with other parents. The children are challenged from early grades with interesting projects they have to present to their class, and the teacher to student ratios ensure that students are not left behind. We could not be more pleased with our choice of Nysmith.”
