Nysmith’s Response to Covid

The Nysmith School has always been committed to providing a safe environment for the safety of both students and staff. From the start of the Covid pandemic three years ago to the present-day conditions, we have made it our top priority to adapt and implement protocols and procedures that have proven successful in preventing any transmission of Covid-19 within the school.

It remains, however, an ongoing responsibility, one that requires us to closely monitor area developments, follow best practices and consider any recommendations from the CDC, WHO and VDOH. Our ongoing success will continue to depend on the strong partnership and trust between the school and parents.

2022-2023 Announcement

At the present time, we will not be offering a Distance Learning option for the 2022-2023 school year.

As we start this school year, here are some of the measures we have put in place:

Students & Staff: We are mask optional, but everyone is required to have several masks in their possession to participate in field trips and certain classroom activities. Members of classes that are exposed to Covid will need to be masked while on site.

Parents & Adult Visitors: All must wear masks while inside the building.

In the event of a positive case of Covid: Due to our low classroom density, high air filtration turnover and other safety protocols in place last year, Nysmith experienced minimal transmission of the Covid-19 virus even after implementing a mask optional policy.  If and when we have a Covid case this year, everyone in the classroom is required to wear a cloth or surgical mask for five (5) days to prevent any spread of the virus.  If that class is scheduled for a field trip or any of that class’ students ride the school bus, they will need to wear either a N95 or KN95 mask at all times while on the bus.
