Ecology Club

By: Arielle K.

Have you ever felt that strange awakening after you’ve been absorbed in your homework or the newest Tik-Tok video, and realize that you haven’t taken the time recently to run outside, to build something, to learn a new fact? It’s stunning how little most people know about the world we’re living in. Can you tell the difference between a Chickadee and a Goldfinch? Can you recognize the leaf of a red maple tree? Have you ever built a pinecone bird feeder? Formulated a plan to reduce the school’s carbon footprint? Probably not. If any of these activities intrigue you, join Ms. Soyka and Ms. Brown’s Ecology club!

Every Monday from 3 to 4 p.m., members gather in Ms. Soyka’s room, anticipating a fun activity. Often, meetings are held outside, as members identify plant and animal species, or even search for ways to make Nysmith more green. It’s an hour of pure excitement, an opportunity to get a little messy and a lot more knowledgeable. On top of that, members discuss one of our most pressing issues: climate change. Currently, members are attempting to earn a Green School certification, in an effort to make a difference for our warming Earth.

If you’re in 3rd through 8th grade, you’re eligible to join this spectacular club. All you need for each meeting is a pair of comfortable clothes that you can get dirty. Get to know the world you live in, the world we all share. Join Ecology Club!
