Laboratory science courses are one of the distinguishing characteristics of our program. All of our science classes are laboratory driven.
From the very start students learn proper science terminology such as hypothesis and procedure, and in general our program runs two to four years above grade level.
Logic and critical thinking skills are incorporated into the daily instruction, and we strongly encourage independent exploration.
Our preschoolers enjoy science by observing and charting weather changes, watching caterpillars emerge into butterflies, anticipating tadpoles turning into frogs, learning about worms and space exploration.
Kindergarteners have science for 45 minutes per day, filled with hands-on experiments.
Starting in the first grade, students participate in the science fair and learn to explore various interests in science; they also gain experience in oral and visual presentations.
Science in fourth through eighth grades continues to be heavily lab oriented. In fourth grade, students culminate their study of the circulatory and respiratory systems of animals by dissecting fish and frog. In fifth grade, students explore human anatomy and study the digestive, excretory, and nervous systems. They dissect fetal pigs. Sixth graders focus on chemistry, exploring the nature of matter, its classification, and chemical changes with a variety of labs. Seventh graders are frequently outside in science as they pursue their investigation of earth sciences including ecology, geology, paleontology, and oceanography. Nysmith eighth graders study physics and explore the principles of motion, energy, heat, sound, and light.
