Computer classes prepare students for today’s world

Computers are an integral part of each student’s academic experience. Constant exposure to latest technology encourages our students to look for new ways to solve real-world problems.

All classroom have at least one PC and many have several depending on their needs.

Several classes are equiped with Digital Projectors which tie into the class PC's and Internet. For those who need a Digital Projector for special projects we have several on mobile carts for class use. All classes have standard overhead projectors.

Four separate teaching labs provide age-appropriate learning environments for our preschool through middle school students.

A fifth lab is our general Media Lab with nearly 40 workstations. This lab avilable to all teachers who might want to bring a class down for a project or additional training. This lab is also used for elective subjects such as Video Editing/Creation.

A Mobile Lab and a writing center enable students to apply the skills learned in computer class throughout their entire school day. And allow reasearch projects to be conducted in individual classes where other subject based teaching resources are also avilable.

Computer instruction time is adjusted as students move up, ranging from 20 minutes each day for each preschooler to blocked one hour classes for middle school students.

Preschoolers learn basic mouse and keyboarding skills as they complete simple word processing and computer graphic activities.

Primary school students work on cross-curricular projects that emphasize research and critical thinking skills.

Eighth graders are immersed in the project development process as they integrate previously learned skills to produce the school yearbook.

While focusing on information problem-solving, the following computer skill areas are introduced in a kid-friendly context:

• Word Processing – composing and editing documents using Microsoft Word
• File Management – organizing and maintaining computer files in a network environment
• Spreadsheets – using Excel for numeric problem solving and for generating charts to
visually represent data
• Graphic Presentations – using multi-media and outlining features of Microsoft PowerPoint to present information in an organized, yet exciting, format.
• Computer Programming – introducing programming constructs with LOGO, Scratch, and JAVA
• Robotics – learning about the important steps of the engineering process by designing, building, and testing Lego Mindstorm robots.
• Graphic Design – digital photo editing using Adobe Photoshop, electronic drawing with Adobe Illustrator.
• Web Development – creating Web pages using XHTML and Flash

In addition to maintaining filtered, High Speed Internet access throughout our school, Internet safety and appropriate use of network resources are mandatory practices for all of our students.
