Our art program is designed to give students hands-on experiences with as wide a variety of art materials as possible. Students acquire the basic vocabulary of art and design while working on independent and collaborative projects. Many of our projects are chosen to coordinate with the social studies, science and language arts programs. Our projects also bring the traditions and histories of art from many different cultures into the classroom. In the upper grades, we encourage our students to develop their own style with more independent work. Our younger students gain confidence in creative expression and an enthusiasm for learning as they discover their talents and abilities. In one year, our students will draw, paint, make prints, and sculpt with clay and other materials. They will work in many styles including representational, stylized, and purely abstract. Throughout the school year, we offer many opportunities for our students to exhibit their art. Our curriculum is based on the guidelines proposed by the National Art Education Association and the Virginia State Standards of Learning for elementary and middle school art programs.
