Frequently asked questions.
How can I tell that my child is gifted?

Children are not all gifted in exactly the same ways. Please do not expect your child to exhibit all of the characteristics listed below. Some children may be highly gifted in one area, while the gifts of others are distributed more broadly and may not be manifested as dramatically in any one area. If, however, you recognize your child in several or many of the behaviors described, you owe it to yourself to learn more about giftedness.

CLUES TO USE WHEN LOOKING FOR GIFTEDNESS IN YOUNG CHILDREN

  • My child is curious about practically everything. She asks questions constantly about a wide variety of subjects.

  • My child sustains her attention for unusual lengths of time when she is really interested in something.

  • My child seems to pull information out of the air. He repeats information from his reading, documentaries, and conversations he has overheard.

  • My child needs almost no repetition to learn something new or remember something she finds interesting. She is a walking encyclopedia on some subjects.

  • My child is highly aware of the feelings of others. He notices how other children feel and can put himself in their positions.

  • My child sometimes worries about “adult” issues, ranging from pollution and injustice to logistical issues such as how to arrange guests’ sleeping quarters in the house.

  • My child loves to take things apart and put them together. He closely examines how things work.

  • My child loves to learn. My child thinks that learning something new is the most fun anyone can have.
